The Langston Hughes’ gospel song play, Black Nativity is back in southern WV for a second year with productions in Beckley and Fayetteville, WV!
When the name Langston Hughes is mentioned, one immediately thinks of the brilliant American poet, social activist and leading figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Least mentioned have been his body of work in the field of playwriting. “Black Nativity” is a retelling of the classic nativity story with an all black cast. Traditional Christmas carols are sung in gospel style with a few songs created specifically for the show. It was one of the first plays written by an African American to be staged at the Lincoln Theater. The show had a successful tour of Europe in 1962 and has been performed annually by theater companies and churches across the country. It is rightfully described as a hand-clapping, foot stomping, unapologetically joyous celebration of the gospel!
You will have an opportunity to experience this spectacular musical celebration over two weekends! December 9th & 10th at the Historic Fayette Theatre in Fayetteville and December 16th, 17th & 18th at WVU Tech Beckley!
This is a family show for all ages produced by the Simply Jazz and Blues Festival! The Simply Jazz and Blues Festival preserves and presents America’s “roots” music, the blues as well as jazz and gospel while honoring our African American musical heritage!
Black Nativity is directed by: Doris A. Fields (Lady D)
